KONZERT // Pappelbaum
Pappelbaum is a collaborative audio and visual project by Nathan Vanderpool and Ronja Polzin. Combining Ronja’s background in visual art with Nathan’s decades of experience as a musician, Pappelbaum encompasses songs, videos, poetry, and performance art, with each discipline naturally informing and extending the others.
The project creates songs with an origin in folk music but have evolved beyond traditional forms, characterized by two voices that sometimes converge and sometimes diverge, maintaining an organic tension without forcing anything into place or gripping too hard to a single idea. The performances unfolds through an interweaving of poetry spoken between songs and videos that communicate what lyrics alone cannot express. Even in louder moments, there is an underlying quality of stillness that shapes the entire experience.
Pappelbaum asks listeners to pay attention to what exists in the spaces between sounds, in the pauses and margins where meaning often lives more fully than it does at the center.
